Shea Butter Tour of Ghana

We recently hosted an unforgettable Shea Butter Tour of Ghana with an amazing group of people. 

Over 10 captivating days, we got to travel in the scenic landscapes of Ghana, getting immersed in its rich culture. 

Along the way, we had the privilege of connecting with the industrious women of Konjeihi, witnessing firsthand the meticulous process of crafting Shea Butter and Kombo Butter. 

From taking part in a traditional community Durbar to savoring mouthwatering local cuisines, cooking with shea butter, dancing to traditional rhythms, and indulging in authentic cultural encounters, our journey was a magical one.

Wa Market Visit

With the help of six friendly guides from the Baraka Wa Team, we dove into the lively Wa market—a big maze of shops selling all sorts of products.

 

The Baraka Wa Team was there to help, answering our questions and translating when needed.

 

We found colorful fabrics, delicious spices, and more around every corner. Meeting the cheerful vendors and feeling the buzz of the market made the trip really special—a true taste of Ghanaian life!

 

Traditional Meeting with the Chief

Our group had the honor of meeting the Chief and Elders of Konjeihi Village. With respect, we introduced ourselves and shared why we were visiting. 

 

The Chief and elders kindly accepted our invitation to join us at the Grand Opening Ceremony. It was a meaningful exchange that deepened our connection with the community.

 

Riding Back to the Hotel with Yellow-Yellow Transport

We enjoyed a delightful ride back from the market in Wa to the hotel in a yellow-yellow (tuk-tuk) local transport vehicle. It was a fun and unique way to experience the local culture and scenery.

 

Visit to the School

We had the wonderful opportunity to visit a nearby primary and junior school close to the village of Konjeihi. 

 

We spent time interacting with the children and teachers and getting a firsthand look at the daily learning activities. It was an eye-opening experience, highlighting both the successes and the areas where financial support is needed. 

 

Carrying Shea on our heads

We then had a unique chance to feel the weight of a bowl filled with Shea Butter balanced on their heads. It was an interesting and memorable experience, giving a glimpse into the traditional methods of carrying goods in the region.

 

Traditional Village Lunch in Tabiasi 

In Tabiasi, we were welcomed by the joyful singing and dancing of women and children upon arrival. 

 

We were then led to an outdoor area where a traditional lunch was being prepared. Here, we had the chance to savor authentic dishes cooked in Shea Butter, immersing ourselves in the rich flavors of the local cuisine.

 

Making Shea Butter 

 

Like the skilled women who produce Baraka's Shea Butter, we got hands on with shea production. From sorting and washing the shea nuts to crushing and roasting them, we got to witness the entire process. It was an insightful experience, giving a deeper appreciation for the traditional methods behind Shea Butter production.

 

Making Kombo Butter

Following Shea Butter production, we were then given the chance to participate in the traditional process of making Kombo Butter, just like the skilled Women Kombo producers. We observed each step, from sorting and washing the Kombo nuts to crushing and roasting them. It was a fascinating experience, offering a firsthand glimpse into the meticulous process behind Kombo Butter production.

 

Dancing, Dancing and More Dancing

Joining in the lively dance with the local women, we moved to the beat of traditional music. It was a joyous celebration of culture and community, creating unforgettable memories of laughter and camaraderie.

 

Grand Opening Celebration

At the Grand Opening Celebration, we were honored guests, treated to a spectacle of speeches, traditional dances, singing, and the melodic tunes of marimba music. It was a vibrant and enchanting event that showcased the rich cultural heritage of the community, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended. 

 

Children, lots of children

We had a lot of fun with all the children participating in work and play.

 

Exploring Oli: A Shea Nut Collectors' Village

We then embarked on a journey to Oli, a village known for its Shea nut collectors. Wandering through a Shea forest, we marvelled at the sight of Shea blossoms in bloom. Amidst the tranquil surroundings, we were serenaded by the melodious voices of Shea collectors singing traditional songs, their rhythmic movements bringing the songs to life through dance. It was a captivating experience which deepened our connection to the rich cultural heritage of the region.

 

Hippo Safari Adventure

Gliding along the tranquil waters of the Black Volta River, we embarked on an unforgettable canoe adventure. As we journeyed deeper into the heart of nature, we were greeted by the majestic sight of seven hippos basking in their natural habitat. 

 

It was a mesmerizing encounter with these magnificent creatures, providing a rare glimpse into their daily lives. Surrounded by the serene beauty of the river, it was a moment of awe and wonder that will be cherished forever.

 

Mole National Park Safari

We then embarked on an exciting safari to explore the natural wonders of Mole National Park. With anticipation coursing through our veins, we set out to encounter elephants in their native habitat. Along the way, we were treated to the delightful sight of elephants, baboons, and warthogs roaming freely around the Mole Hotel, where we stayed and dined. 

 

It was a thrilling and immersive experience, getting up close and personal with some of Africa's most iconic wildlife species amidst the breathtaking landscapes of the park.

 

Crafting Bolga Baskets: A Cultural Encounter

We then ventured to a vibrant basket makers' village near Bolgatanga, immersed in the rhythmic beats of traditional songs and dances. Amidst the lively atmosphere, we had the opportunity for hands-on experience with the skilled artisans, witnessing the intricate process of crafting Bolga baskets up close. 

 

Engaging with the makers, we were encouraged to ask questions and learn about the rich cultural significance woven into each woven creation. It was a memorable and enlightening experience, fostering a deeper appreciation for the artistry and tradition behind Bolga basketry.

 

Exploring Cape Coast Slave Fort: A Profound Journey

Embarking on a poignant and detailed tour of the Cape Coast Slave Fort, we delved deep into its harrowing history. As we walked through the solemn corridors and chambers, we couldn't help but feel the weight of the past bearing down upon them. Emotions ran high as we confronted the stark realities of the transatlantic slave trade, standing in the very places where countless lives were bought, sold, and brutally torn apart.

 

It was a somber and reflective experience for all involved, a stark reminder of the enduring legacy of slavery and the resilience of the human spirit. Despite the heavy emotions, the tour served as a powerful reminder of the importance of bearing witness to history and honoring the memories of those who suffered. It was a journey that left an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of all who participated, sparking a renewed commitment to justice, equality, and understanding.

 

Larabanga Mosque visit

The Larabanga Mosque visit showed us Ghana's ancient religious legacy. 

 

Dating back 500 years, this mosque holds tales of faith and community. 

We got to see and touch a 500-year-old Baobab tree, connecting with centuries of devotion and tradition, leaving an unforgettable impression of reverence and history.

 

 

This was an unforgettable trip that we will all remember for a long time to come.
